Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

29. Always (1989)

Always Audrey Hepburn
Universal

Always is perhaps one of Spielberg's least-remembered films, even despite starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, John Goodman and, in her final role, Audrey Hepburn.

A remake of the 1943 romantic drama A Guy Named Joe that nobody asked for, Always is certainly well-intended and has its heart in the right place, but its reliance on sentimentality is infuriating, making it a textbook example of most everything Spielberg's detractors criticise him for.

Dreyfuss, playing a dead fighter pilot spirited back to Earth to help his ex (Hunter) move on, tries hard to anchor the material, and nobody gives a bad performance here, but the script is hopelessly silly and not remotely aware enough of it.
