Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
28. Hook (1991)
Hook is that Spielberg film that, above all others, is beloved by an entire generation of millennials...who probably haven't watched it since they were kids.
Viewed with critical, adult eyes, the swashbuckling adventure isn't nearly as wondrous or water-tight as it seemed 20 years ago, bloated out to 141 soul-destroying minutes, such that even charming work from Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman barely suffices.
To his credit, the director himself admits he was in over his head and the solid concept needed a stronger script. He said, "I didn’t quite know what I was doing and I tried to paint over my insecurity with production value."
And that's absolutely true. Lavish but ultimately more gaudy than entrancing, Hook spends way too long hammering its facile message home, and what should've been a slam-dunk for Spielberg's sensibilities is instead one of his most disappointing failures.
