Every Studio Ghibli Movie Ranked Worst To Best

3. The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (2013)

Although Takahata's bleak, weary tale of war and family Grave of the Fireflies is his most recognisable film, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is surely his masterpiece.

The last movie directed before his death in 2018, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya took several years to complete, and went through numerous creative changes as Takahata worked to ensure his story was perfect.

In the end, it was time well spent, as the film's watercolour visuals bring to life an engrossing, moving story of a nymph who encounters love after growing up in a world far removed from her own.

Resonating with the kind of big-hearted warmness that has followed Ghibli since day one, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is the studio's most beautiful project, and one that should unquestionably rank alongside the greats of modern animation.

Rest in peace, Paku-san. Thank you for the art.
