Several years before he became a household name with Guardians of the Galaxy, writer-director James Gunn took an altogether darker stab at the superhero genre with this $2.5 million black comedy about a regular Joe being a crime-fighter.

There are undeniable tonal issues, but Rainn Wilson's central performance is a hoot, Ellen Page is a blast and it's overall a refreshingly dark riposte to all the safe, PG-13-rated superhero flicks we sit through.

It'll be too rough around the edges and mean-spirited for many, but it's also smart, provocative, violent, grimly hilarious and even legitimately quite affecting at times.

Why Kevin Feige saw this and decided to sign Gunn up for Guardians, though, remains a total mystery (especially as the movie bombed hard at the box office).
