Though its scale seems positively quaint in 2018, back in 2012 The Avengers was a monumental achievement for Joss Whedon, managing to bring these six superheroes together to form a dysfunctional but ultimately effective team.

Yes, the cinematography evokes a big-budget TV show and the opening is pretty rough, but beyond that, the gags are straight fire, the action crackles, and the performances are fantastic.

It may not have much serious weight to it, but it's perhaps the most purely fun entry into the MCU, and fully delivered on decades of fan desire to see this come to fruition. We've come a long way since, but we'd be nowhere without it.
