Every Terrence Malick Movie Ranked Worst To Best

3. A Hidden Life (2019)

Song To Song
Fox Searchlight Pictures

Malick's most recent epic assessment of human strife is also one of his finest films, requiring patience from its audience but bursting with rewards for those willing to join him on his journey. The story of a conscientious objector during WWII, A Hidden Life is a late-career masterpiece that finds Malick at his most philosophical.

The film follows a real-life Austrian farmer called Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), who refused to submit to the orders of the Nazi he was told to fight for, and eventually paid the price of death for his defiance. It's incredibly sad, but depicts Franz's final days with both hope and bravery.

Though the ending is predictable, there's no part of Malick's biopic that will fail to shock and move you, as Franz uses his love of God to fight his fear till the end. It's beautiful in its depiction of moral strength in the face of fascism, and despite being three hours long will never lose your attention.
