Every Tim Burton Film Ranked From Worst To Best

9. Batman Returns

Edward Scissorhands, like Tim Burton, just can't reach out and touch others
Warner Bros.

This sequel to his original Batman film - one that will be coming up on this list much later - is a successful continuation of the Dark Knight's story. The gothic atmosphere is kept but allowed to have some breathing room to accommodate for some sillier moments, and while these ultimately make the movie a little less compelling than its predecessor it is still a lot of fun.

In this take on the superhero, he has to battle against the rise of the twisted and deformed villain Penguin, who is wreaking havoc on the city of Gotham through the help of an evil businessman called Max Schreck. Additionally, one of the employees of Schreck ends up taking on the mantle of Catwoman in order to gain revenge of her own.

The film is carried by its wonderfully fun performances, most notably from Danny DeVito as Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer in the role of Catwoman. As with the previous film, it has brilliant costume design, and this noir type focus on the cartoonish gothic setting.

Ultimately it is an excellent chapter for the legendary hero but sometimes falls flat in its pursuit of improving upon the first instalment.
