Every Tim Burton Film Ranked From Worst To Best

2. Batman

Edward Scissorhands, like Tim Burton, just can't reach out and touch others
Warner Bros.

Before this film, the most significant interpretation Batman had seen in live-action was the campy Adam West TV show. While this had plenty of charm in its awfulness, this project indeed took the potential that the Dark Knight had and brought it to the big screen. It is dark, fun and completely captures the spirit of the caped crusader.

In this film, we find Gotham City's hero battling against the crime boss Jack Napier, who after falling into a vat of acid has transformed into the hideously evil - but incredibly fun - Joker.

The portrayal of Joker in this film is brought to life brilliantly by Jack Nicholson. While he doesn't capture the dark interpretation that has become how we recognise the character now, he steals every scene that he is in and still holds up as a generous interpretation of the great villain.

The film itself is severe and gritty but never fails to be enjoyable. Its contrast between cartoonish supervillainy and dark, violent crime makes it a really unique approach to the comic-book movie genre.

Burton's style and manner of directing blended so well with this property to produce a superhero film that was years ahead of its time.
