Every Tom Cruise Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

13. Mission: Impossible (1996)

Tom Cruise Interview With The Vampire

The film that saw Tom Cruise transition into into an all-out action star, the first Mission Impossible is still (almost) the very best the franchise has to offer.

Directed by the brilliant Brian de Palma, the debut of Ethan Hunt finds the super spy racing to uncover a troubling conspiracy and find out who - or what - killed his original crew.

Much more concerned with simple tension rather than increasingly insane stunts, the film is honestly the only pure "spy movie" of the series, allowing Hunt to thwart his enemies with clever deceptions and careful plotting. Unlike most other films in the series, the stakes here are through the roof, and 25 years on it's still a joy to watch.
