While the first Phase of the Infinity Saga made clear moves toward building the first iteration of the Avengers, the first Phase of the Multiverse Saga has done no such thing. Instead, a different team is being brought together, not by Nick Fury but by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

First appearing in Black Widow with a pre-existing relationship with Yelena Belova, she then made her mark in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier by recruiting John Walker to her team. With the announcement at D23, the roster has been confirmed to include some wonderful characters and villains/anti-heroes.

Alongside Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and David Harbour’s returns arguably highlight the Thunderbolts roster, with the potential for even more names to be added. Surely Zemo has to appear, right? And the fact that the movie will close out Phase Five suggests that it will be another strong addition to the MCU.

The only concern with this movie at the moment, is the risk that it devolves into something of a Black Widow sequel. With Yelena, the Red Guardian, and Taskmaster all set to reprise their roles from the first movie of Phase Four, Marvel Studios need to ensure there is plenty more to the movie than just the continuation of their story.
