Every Will Smith Movie Ranked Worst To Best

6. Enemy Of The State (1998)

King Richard
Buena Vista Distribution

Tony Scott's relentless thriller Enemy of the State casts Smith in one of his surprisingly few everyman roles, as a lawyer unwittingly thrown into a government conspiracy alongside Gene Hackman's weathered surveillance expert.

Unlike many of his roles, Smith here isn't overly confident or lucky; instead, he's conflicted, unprepared, and completely out of his depth, especially as the conspiracy begins to rear its ugly head in increasingly violent, unpredictable ways.

Energetic and thrilling, Enemy of the State never trips itself up with too many twists and obvious genre tropes, but keeps its tension heightened to an almost unbearable level whilst Smith and Hackman work their magic.
