Every Wolverine Movie Performance Ranked Worst To Best

2. The Wolverine

Wolverine Hugh Jackman
20th Century Fox

Whereas X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a standalone Wolverine film that totally failed, 2013's The Wolverine is a vast improvement. No, it's not a perfect film, but as an exploration of the character is excels where others falter.

By the time The Wolverine rolled around, many X-Men fans felt like they had a solid grip on the character, and that another solo endeavour would just be totally redundant. Wisely, James Mangold's The Wolverine heads in a completely fresh direction, transplanting the character into a radically different country and looking at a part of Wolverine's history not previously explored.

The film is a culmination of multiple things audiences have seen the character wrestling with: his love of Jean Grey and his hatred of his own immortality. The Wolverine attempts to reconcile both of these character arcs, offering viewers some well-needed closure. On top of that, the action is a lot different to what fans had previously seen, as Wolverine battles the enormous Silver Samurai.
