How could it be anyone else?

The most famous X-Men villain of all time might have been helped on the big screen by two incredible performances by Michael Fassbender and Sir Ian McKellen, but his mythology is strong enough beyond that to make him a great character.

His backstory is dark and heartbreaking, adding a perverse sense of justice to his plans to replace homo sapiens as the dominant species. It's not merely that he believes in the superiority of mutants, it's that his trauma is a living monument to the reality of "humanity." He's Malcolm X to Professor X's Martin Luther King and at times you'll find yourself believing in his agenda, even as you're aware you'd be persecuted by him as part f it.

He combines that nuance with an almost gleeful pantomime villain spirit and a commitment to the kind of over-arching villain plans that make him part Bond villain and partly drawn directly from the comics. Imagine turning the Statue Of Liberty into a secret weapon - the AUDACITY!

Hopefully, Marvel get him right a third time, but with the comics lore behind them, they'll already have a great foundation for whoever ends up playing him.
