The Marvel Cinematic Universe was much smaller when it first began, and pumped out nowhere near the amount of movies every year as it does today. After a year hiatus through 2009, the MCU returned to screens with Iron Man 2, the third entry in the franchise.

Of course, it had a lot to live up to after the original movie was as well received as it was, however the sequel simply couldn’t live up to those expectations. Robert Downey Jr. was as charismatic, charming, and down right lovable as ever, but the rest of the movie let him down somewhat.

The story itself fell flat, with a generic cannon-fodder CGI fest for an ending, supported by one of the weakest antagonists in MCU history. Back when one MCU movie a year wasn’t uncommon, this particular one left a lot to be desired.

At least 2010 gave fans their very first look at Natasha Romanoff, a character that would go on to become arguably one of the franchise’s very best over the next ten years. However, it was done in such an unnecessary, over-sexualised way that even this is something Marvel likely wishes it could change.
