In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are almost countless characters that have become heroes to the fans watching, and that came together to fight Thanos for the fate of the universe in Avengers: Endgame. However, not all of these characters were created equal.

Even from the original six Avengers there was something of a hierarchy, with the holy trinity of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor carrying much of the power of the team’s first iteration. Tony Stark was introduced three years prior, but 2011 gave fans both the God of Thunder and the Star-Spangled Man.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston respectively, neither Thor nor The First Avengers are likely to top many people’s list as their favourite MCU movies. However, they acted as they were supposed to, which was solid origin stories for two characters that would prove invaluable to the franchise over the next ten plus years.

Both movies were also integral to the set up of The Avengers a year later. Thor brought to life Loki, the wonderfully compelling villain that would rival Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and The First Avenger brought Captain America to the present day, ready to throw in with Nick Fury and SHIELD to save the world once more.
