Everything Avengers: Infinity War Fixes About The MCU
5. The Previous Lack Of Real Emotional Stakes
Now, there will be some who say that the end of Infinity War doesn't matter, because all of the characters who die are too important to the future of the MCU for their deaths to last. It would be like Marvel cutting off their own noses to spite their faces and something in Avengers 4 will lead to their return.
BUT, that doesn't mean that Infinity War felt like the most legitimately threatening story for the MCU's heroes to date. Even Age Of Ultron, which killed a fairly important character and Thor: Ragnarok, which killed several didn't land these sorts of blows. And it isn't like the emotion is limited to the snap either: before that we see Heimdall, Loki and Gamora all killed off (not to mention the Black Order) and there will genuinely be long-term wounds even if the snap is undone.
And the way it's set up - with the foreshadowing about trading lives - it could well be that the survivors find a way to sacrifice themselves to let the others live. That would certainly make sense given who it is who "dies" in the first place. The point is - no matter how it turns out - this will still hurt for a good while.
