Evil Dead Rise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

Ups...

6. The NASTY Gore

Evil Dead Rise
Warner Bros.

What would any Evil Dead movie be without some absolutely insane violence? Though Rise falls fairly short of the remake's unrelentingly nauseating brutality, it is still a film jam-packed with gnarly moments primed to make you squirm.

Without going into too much detail, a brief-but-skin-crawling moment involving a cheese grater will leave many watching through splayed fingers, and the film doesn't shy away from subjecting its characters - yes, even its younger ones - to some truly horrible experiences.

While largely avoiding the cartoonish wackiness of the second and third Evil Dead movies, the film's general reliance on household objects to inflict violence gives the film - which is largely confined to the apartment - a uniquely close-to-home feel that only heightens the queasiness of it all.

Don't let yourself get overhyped - no, this isn't the nastiest film in the series by a longshot - but those craving some ferocious blood-letting should get their fill.
