Fantastic Beasts: 10 Actors Who Could Replace Fired Johnny Depp

6. Matt Smith

Gellert Grindelwald
BBC Studios

Rumour has it that former Doctor Who Matt Smith was once set to play a younger version of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (likely after the villain had used Rey and Ben Solo to rejuvenate himself). That was reported by reliable sources, but it seems fans may never truly know what went on behind the scenes.

Of course, Smith's goofy Terminator Genisys performance aside, and his work in both film and television is certainly proof enough that he has the potential to play an iconic big screen baddie.

If the plan is to continue portraying Gellert Grindelwald in a creepy, sinister fashion, then Smith is arguably one of the best possible choices. He has a unique look, and an aura about him which could ensure that Albus Dumbledore's one-time closest ally continues to stand out as a dark wizard who is, in many ways, even more terrifying than Lord Voldermort.

Smith may have seemingly missed out on Star Wars, but there's nothing to say he can't still land the sort of role which puts him on the map as a great movie villain; this might just be that role!
