Throughout the Harry Potter series there are a bunch of amazing magical creatures. One of these creatures is Buckbeak the hippogriff, who lived with Hagrid then Sirius Black, later returning to Hagrid. The almost-execution of Buckbeak is one of the more poignant early moments in the series, and is an effective way of drawing the audience into the world.

When news broke that the Harry Potter spin-off would be adapted from Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, then, a rumour began circulating that one of the beasts in Newt Scamander's possession was going to be Buckbeak the hippogriff, explaining how Hagrid eventually came to own him.

It was claimed that Buckbeak would already be in Scamander's possession, and would be one of the creatures that escaped during Newt's time in New York City. Seeing how happy he was in the wild, Newt was supposedly going to choose to let him go free.

Though this obviously didn't happen, the rumour may have had some basis in reality, as the notion of letting a creature go free is touched upon through the Thunderbird.
