Fantastic Beasts 2: 10 Biggest Changes To Harry Potter Canon (And If They Work)

5. The Lestrange Family Tree

The Change:

Alongside Leta, we're introduced to some more of the Lestrange family in Fantastic Beasts 2, with much of the movie - and its characters - speculating that Credence might actually be Corvus V. He's not, and as it turns out Corvus did indeed die after the ship went down, but crucially it's also said he's the last of the male line of his father. Going across the family tree doesn't turn up any more males, so it makes the existence of the Lestranges in Harry Potter seem, well, impossible.

Does It Work?

Although the movie does highlight the Lestrange family tree, it doesn't go into too much depth on it and you need to do some digging to discover the real implications. The movie just about gets away with it, but there'll need to be some further explanation for how Rodolphus came to be. Corvus V's great-grandfather, Corvus II, did have a brother, but he seemingly didn't have any sons, and there are some cousins further out there too, but again the line seems to have come to an end with Corvus V. There should be another Lestrange already born - the one who ends up a member of the Slug Club - but it's unclear where he actually comes from at this stage too.
