Fantastic Beasts: 21 WTF Moments

1. Obliviate Doesn't Work Properly

Fantastic Beasts WTF
Warner Bros. Pictures

The stinger that Kowalski has to be obliviated and sent back to his own boring life is truly heart-breaking - particularly when he's seen back working in the factory that was killing him - but at least he gets a romantic pay off seeing him open his bakery and reunited with his love Queenie.

The bitter sweet ending might have been braver, but it's not like the film even really committed to it. Instead, Kowalski was allowed to remember some elements of his magical experience (the bakery is stocked with creations based on the animals he met) and there's definitely a flicker of recognisation when he meets Queenie again. So in the interest of some romance, the whole concept of obliviate is thrown out and given an exception, which we aren't supposed to pick at lest it pull down the entire final act resolution of the film.

If he can remember surely lots of other people caught in the Forget-Me-Rain can too? Isn't that horribly ruinous for the Frank resolution? Or is he just somehow special?

And it wouldn't matter if obliviate worked on Kowalski anyway, because there's no way he's not getting involved in magic again with Queenie back on the picture. That's good for sequels (since he's the best character in the film), but it's terribly conceited.
