Fast & Furious Franchise: 20 Greatest Action Sequences Ranked

16. The Fate Of The Furious - New York

This is a very memorable set-piece from the franchise's eighth film, since the team face perhaps their hardest opponent of all... Dom Toretto himself.

In The Fate of the Furious, Dom inexplicably goes rogue and joins with cyber-terrorist Cypher (Charlize Theron). In fact, she has his baby son hostage and threatens to kill the baby unless Dom does exactly what she says, but Dom's bewildered team don't know this.

In New York, during the film's second act, Cypher uses Dom to steal a nuclear football from a Russian official and his team try to stop him.

It's a typically well-filmed and punchy car chase by this franchise's standards and it delivers plenty of high-octane thrills, but it's taken to the next level by just how stressful and sad it is to watch Dom fighting his team. After all, as the characters never, ever stop repeating, they are family.

The scene just before this, in which Cypher hijacks tens of cars to stop the Russian minister's limo, wasn't quite so successful since that car hijacking device was a bit too silly even for this franchise but the rest of the film's New York action rocked.
