Another of the film's big "reveals" is signposted with hilarious obviousness. At the end of act two, Christian receives a dossier about Jack Hyde's past, where he learns that he spent his childhood being moved around foster homes, and Christian remarks, "So was I."

To anyone remotely paying attention to what's going on, it sets off loud alarm bells that we're being set up for a twist, and that's exactly what happens at the end of the film, when Christian finds out that he and Jack were in the same foster home as kids.

Jack feels that he should've been "picked" by Christian's adoptive parents and is owed a new life. The fact that things could've so easily been so different for both Jack and Christian is one of the film's few truly interesting ideas, but of course, it's not explored with any depth or nuance.

If you didn't see this twist coming, though, you really weren't paying attention (not that you could be blamed for that).
