Fifty Shades Freed Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

2. The Appealing Pop Soundtrack

Even in the film's worst moments, its soundtrack is actually pretty great. Primarily composed of contemporary pop licks and classy covers of classic hits, the sharply-produced music evokes a solid mood and makes an admirable attempt at engaging the viewer even when the visual content fails.

Hailee Steinfeld's "Capital Letters" is an especially fitting, uplifting bubblegum tune playing over the film's opening titles, and if nothing else, it's catchy as hell.

So, the film might be trash and much of the music isn't always slotted perfectly into what's happening on screen - especially during that car chase - but at least the world got a pretty damn good pop album out of it. Things could be worse, right?
