Fifty Shades Of Grey: 10 Things That Make Absolutely No Sense Whatsoever
6. Nobody Is This Naive. Nobody
One of the main sticking points for audiences has been how impossibly pure and virginal the character of Anastasia Steele is. A final year college student with a shy demeanour and little life experience, she is the absolute antithesis of Christian's power and desire for control and needs led by the hand down this proverbial rabbit hole of sexual exploration. If nothing else it's a solid idea for a character paradigm but so shallow are the depths of Ana's life experience that the story pushes things into parody very, very quickly. Virtually every facet of Christian's interests need to be spelled out for his new plaything with every term needing explained and every action needing justified. "I have a playroom" he tells her, "like, your XBox and stuff?" she replies. Whilst this is obviously just a device James' has gone for to make sure even the most bondage-ignorant readers will be able to keep up, the bar is set insultingly low. Oh, and despite being brilliant at all this new sex stuff Ana is a virgin as well, because it's impossible to make someone seem virginal and innocent without them actually being a virgin apparently.
