7. Sleazy Inner Monologue
When filmmakers really need to show what is inside the character's head, but do not have the time to show it through action they usually turn to voice over to patch up the story. Yes, the key word there is "patch." While it has been used effectively many times in the past for style purposes, fixing a story through dialogue someone says in their head can be disastrous. As many screenwritering books will tell you, "show, don't tell," and don't try to make a shoddy story seem plausible through dialogue and voice over. In the end it won't wok. The Fifty Shades of Grey movie seems doomed to this fate. Without being able to hear Ana's thoughts the audience will probably find themselves questioning her actions the entire time or worse, think that she is stupid to get involved with Christian at all. Even then voice over does have its limits and the source material pushes it well over the edge in this case as Ana is constantly describing Christian's package. Nope, no holy crap's, holy moses', or holy f***'s for you.
