Far and away the favourite for the role when the film was first optioned, Somerhalder is still a front-runner in fans' eyes. Even when Dornan was cast, there was a fairly vocal response online suggesting the Vampire Diaries lead would have been a better choice.
Pros He's another who has played a vampire in a ridiculously popular show, and quite frankly he's the closest you're going to get to Edward Cullen without casting Robert Pattinson. Plus he comes with a ready made fanbase, and would undoubtedly be a fan favourite pick (in terms of the books at the very least).
Cons Would Universal so willingly concede that they made a mistake in not casting Somerhalder in the first place?
