First Candyman Trailer Dares You To Say His Name

Nia DaCosta's remake looks the real deal...

It's almost time for a whole new generation of horror movie fans to stand in front of their mirrors daring themselves to get up the nerve to say three words five times. Because the Nia DaCosta-directed, Jordan Peele-produced remake of 1992 classic Candyman is coming to screens in 2020.

We now have the first trailer for the chiller, which sees Yahya Abdul-Mateen II take the lead on a new take on the urban legend and it looks great.

Leaning heavily on some of Peele's established tropes - so much in fact that it feels a little like he's the one directing - the trailer packs in quite a few spoilers but does a great of never actually showing the iconic villain on screen. Instead, it's all about rebuilding the mythology of the figure, at the same time as playing with some expectations.

Here's the trailer...

By the look of it, Tony Todd's original Candyman will be passing the torch here to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who unwittingly becomes possessed by the Candyman when he investigates the legend. Careless really, but this is infamously a franchise that depends on its victims doing idiotic things and getting their comeuppance.

It definitely looks like a strong contender for one of the most exciting horrors of the year and DaCosta's making a big claim for your attentions here. Add her skill to a great cast and a brilliant underlying story and it might be a real winner.

What do you think of the trailer?
