10. The Paul Walker Problem...Isn't A Problem
The biggest obstacle facing Furious 7 was obviously the untimely death of Paul Walker in November 2013, when he had filmed just 60% of his scenes. As such, his brothers Cody and Caleb were called in to act as body doubles to finish his scenes (assisted by CGI) with a re-shaped story and help retire the character. Given that movies are rarely filmed in sequence, many were no doubt expecting a messy final product, but the biggest surprise is that the end result is surprisingly coherent. Even if you're keeping your eyes peeled for uncanny valley CGI Paul Walker, it's incredibly well-massaged into the rest of the movie and only really noticeable on occasion. James Wan uses judicious editing to make Brian feel a part of the action even when Walker isn't around, and frankly there's so much insanity going on that it's tough to keep track of whether there's too little of Brian on screen or not. If someone without knowledge of Walker's death watched the film, they'd probably never guess that the actor passed away, and that's a credit to both the editing team and Weta Digital's impeccable work completing the actor's final role. So, for those expecting a creepy animated Paul Walker puppet, sorry, but the final result is miraculously subtle and really quite ingenious in its execution.
