Gambit: 10 Lessons It Must Learn From X-Men Failures

7. Good Special Effects

The quality of the visual effects in the X-Men films has varied - which is more of a big deal in an X-Men film than any other, really, because whether or not you buy the mutants and their superheroic abilities hinges on whether or not said powers look realistic. The original movie did a pretty good job with Cyclops's optic blasts, Storm's weather powers, and in making Magneto's mastery of metal looking a bit more impressive than a Uri Gellar trick on steroids. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, meanwhile, had CGI claws. Which looked about as good as you'd expect. Gambit's powers a little more subtle, but that just means all the more work for the visual effects boffins. He showed off that skill set a little in the first Wolverine spin-off - the ability to infuse objects with kinetic energy, which usually amounts to him chucking exploding playing cards at people - and it certainly wasn't as bad as the claws, but nor did it make his powers seem impressive enough for him to be anything but a bit part in a larger ensemble. Something more impressive for Gambit's big solo debut please!
