Gambit: 10 Lessons It Must Learn From X-Men Failures

6. A Real Supporting Cast

Part of what makes the X-Men films work so well is that they have a rich ensemble cast, with multiple different personalities clashing and a character that appeals to every kind of audience member. Cyclops is stoic and by-the-book, Wolverine is rebellious, Jean Grey a little uptight, Storm immensely powerful but centred, Magneto not wholly evil, all that good stuff. The Wolverine films, too, benefited from pretty decent supporting casts. Or at least they were on paper, before Deadpool got silenced and Will.i.am got cast. The second Wolverine film fared a little better, but still fell back on some fairly cliché stock character archetypes when bringing the likes of Silver Samurai and Mariko to the big screen. Gambit isn't blessed with a particularly memorable supporting cast in his few solo comic book series, so it's likely those teaming up with him in his solo film will be original creations: just make them a bit more well-rounded than The Blob or whoever all those killed off in First Class were, eh?
