Gambit: 10 Lessons It Must Learn From X-Men Failures

4. Don't Lean On The Comics Too Much

Really, the one big lesson that should be coming through here is that the Gambit film shouldn't be too beholden to its source material. Remy LeBeau has starred in a few solo titles and stories over the years, but they haven't been much to write home about; nor are they the sort of thing that could sustain a feature length motion picture. But they should also stop caring about the comics so much because the previous X-Men films have been severely hampered by their devotion to them. While Days Of Future Past played fast and loose with the particulars of the classic comic storyline of the same name, part of what made the third film in the series - The Last Stand - such an ungainly mess was that it tried too hard to jam as much of the comic onto the screen. It just didn't work. The films are there own thing. Same with The Wolverine trying to adapt the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller eighties miniseries, and failing spectacularly, making some sort of mediocre Frankenstein monster of comic and movie. Just let it be its own thing.
