Gambit: 10 Lessons It Must Learn From X-Men Failures
5. Create Decent Villains
Another thing that Gambit will struggle with is in crafting a decent antagonist. After they realised they couldn't just use Ian McKellen's peerless Magneto in every film, the makers of the X-Men movies struggled to fill that vacuum, usually plumping for some new crackpot scientist working on a "cure" for the mutant population, or else casting yet another person as William Stryker. Or else they went for Sabertooth, which nobody really bought, least of all because noted character actor Liev Schrieber doesn't have a whole lot in common with noted WCW wrestler Tyler Mane. Again, Gambit doesn't have a proper nemesis in the comics - or at least not one anybody cares about. Nobody needs to see Mr Sinister on the big screen any time soon. Or ever. So much like the potential supporting cast that will be appearing alongside Remy in his solo film, it's likely that the villains will have to be new creations too. Ones that don't lean on the political subtext, aren't Magneto, and aren't William Stryker being played by yet another actor. Perhaps somebody from his criminal past back for revenge? Otherwise, Ego The Living Planet.
