Gambit: 4 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 4 Why It Could Suck)

2. It's Free From The Weight Of Continuity

The last time Gambit appeared on screen was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a film that was weighed down by the expectations of sticking to the continuity of the main X-series and tying up as many loose ends as possible, even those we didn't need to see like how Cyclops ended up at the Xavier's School. As well as all the other impressive ways that Gareth Hood's solo Wolverine film managed to cock things up, it really suffered by not telling it's own story. Thankfully Bryan Singer reset the universe he created by tinkering with the timeline in Days Of Future Past, so Gambit can go off on his merry way without having to explain anything, let alone explaining how much whey protein Remy LeBeau had to get through to turn him from Taylor Kitsch into Channing Tatum. It also means that any nods to previous films or the wider X-Men universe only have to be easter eggs and not extended cameos, hopefully letting Gambit embrace the idea of telling a completely separate story within the X-Universe like The Wolverine managed to do.
