Gambit: 4 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 4 Why It Could Suck)

3. Directors Have Been Running Away Screaming

Apart from Tatum, the only thing that Gambit has had locked down for some time is a release date of October 2016. Unfortunately finding a director to start production in time has proved difficult, and although Doug Liman has finally taken up the chair he's joined the project after a wealth of directing talent had already put the script in the circular filing cabinet under the desk. Amongst those who have turned down the opportunity to direct Tatum's superhero dream movie are Darren Aronofsky (who also left production on Hugh Jackman's The Wolverine before shooting), The Raid's Gareth Evans, A Most Violent Year's J.C. Chandor and even Tatum's Foxcatcher director, Bennett Miller. So, what turned all of these directors off the project? Well, the film's previously announced director, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Rupert Wyatt, has been cited as believing that Fox was unwilling to accept his creative vision. Wyatt is also believed to have left because he didn't want to make a bad film, all of which is enough to make you worry that Fox could have another Fantastic Four on its hands already.
