Gambit: 4 Reasons It Could Be Awesome (And 4 Why It Could Suck)

1. The Character Isn't As Popular As He Was

It's hard to shake the feeling that Gambit would have been better served with an important role in a mainstream X-Men film, much like Nightcrawler in X2, before spinning off into a solo film. Gambit's role in Mr Sinister's Mutant Massacre would have been a great starting point, providing both a way to show the different motivations and emotional sides to the character and a chance for Tatum to prove that he is worthy of seeing solo. At the moment it's hard to imagine anybody other than the most fervent X-Men and Magic Mike fans getting too excited for a solo Gambit film. The problem is that the character's popularity was arguably at its height somewhere in the 1990s, when the X-Men animated series was going strong and characters like Gambit, Storm and Nightcrawler were everywhere. The character is still very much part of the established classic X-Men line-up, but whether or not he can capture the imagination of cinema goers in the way that the likes of Deadpool surely will remains to be seen. It may be that Fox shouldn't fall back so much on what they think are old favourites and try more fresh, new approaches. Are you excited for Gambit? Or is it already doomed?
