George Miller: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best
9. Happy Feet Two (2011)
It's kind of bizarre to ponder how, exactly, George Miller - man of sand and blood - got involved with a franchise like Happy Feet. After all, he's not the first person who springs to mind when you say "dancing penguin movie" - nor he is the second, third, fourth of fifth. Alas, the success of the first Happy Feet movie in 2006 meant that Miller was positioned to return for the inevitable sequel (there was always going to be a sequel: human beings cannot instinctively turn down cute, dancing penguins). And return he did. Unfortunately, what magic was glimpsed in the original picture felt curiously absent in the follow-up; everything here feels forced, laboured and manufactured - a sequel for the sake of it. Bill and Will, two comical shrimp characters played by Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, are by far the highlight of the movie, but the rest of the picture struggles to keep things interesting, despite Miller's occasional bursts of directorial oomph made apparent through the gliding camera work - not to mention that most of the song choices here are highly insufferable.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
