A zombie film with a difference, this low-key thriller-drama adapted from M.R. Carey's acclaimed novel focuses more on characters than gnarly gore (though there's plenty of that, too), teasing out fine work from an excellent ensemble including Glenn Close, Paddy Considine, Gemma Arterton, and brilliant newcomer Sennia Nanua.

Even with its deference towards humanity over set-pieces, the action is still thrillingly directed, and all the more intense because the human motivations behind all the violence are completely believable. A clever spin on an increasingly tired genre, this is a criminally under-appreciated film that totally deserves your attention.
