Ghostbusters: 21 WTF Moments In The Female Remake
17. Patty The Stereotype
The first Ghostbusters film famously gets a lot of flack for being about three intelligent scientists and a black guy looking for whatever work he can get. How terrible to think that the follow up is about three intellectual scientists and a black toll booth operator who comes along for the ride.
And that isn't the only issue: Patty feels like an amalgamation of racial sterotypes. She might not have a degree in something clever sounding, but by gawd she's got the street smarts. Is she just a nod to the same treatment of Ernie Hudson's Winston? Isn't that something distastefully beyond self-reference? I think it's called reinforcement.
But of course it would be picked up. The narrative of the Ghostbusters marketing has been focused on its progressive, inclusive spirit, so they opened themselves up to this kind of scrutiny. And they fall down badly because of it.
