9. Return to the Roots of the Franchise
For some reason I have it in my head that in Ghostbusters III, the team will have been elevated to fame and fortune thanks to their victories throughout the first two movies; that theyll be this illustrious organisation now complete with public approval, financial standing and political sway with the mayors office (sort of like the supernatural version of Rocky by Rocky III). However, I argue that, if Ackroyd has any sense, hell have taken the script in the complete opposite direction. The original Ghostbusters films worked so
well because they characters were always the underdogs; they operated on the fringe of society and were typically vilified as con men by the mainstream. Thats why it was so satisfying when said mainstream were forced to call upon the Ghostbusters to save the day; the popular clique were forced to eat their words, the meek inherit the Earth. Id personally prefer it if the Ghostbusters had sank back to obscurity; their stunt in #2 with the Statue of Liberty being seen by the public as an elaborate con or even an urban myth. And for a third and final time (hopefully), theyd be forced to prove themselves as intangible butt-kickers once again, despite quickly approaching a pensionable age. To my mind, the Ghostbusters should always be kept at arms-length to greatness; thats what made them work as characters in the first place and thats whatll make em work again a third time around.
