Ghostbusters 3: 7 Big News Revelations About 2020's Upcoming Sequel
4. Jason Reitman Is Directing, Ivan Reitman Produces
Much like the recent spate of nostalgic reboots and sequels - like Halloween, Terminator 6 and Child's Play (with LeBron James' Friday The 13th and Candyman to come) - that have brought back old cast members or creators, Ghostbusters 3 is turning back to the past. As well as the returning cast, the film is bringing in legacy director Jason Reitman to make it.
He might have said in the past that there'd "be no bustin'" in his career, but he's changed his tune and spoke on the announcement of his enthusiasm for the project:
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
He also appeared on Bill Burr’s podcast to allay any fears on his hiring, saying that he's not ‘"making the ‘Juno’ of ‘Ghostbusters’ movies." Hopefully he's ot saying that he has no intention of making something like an Oscar-winning, highly lucrative indie that got him a nod for Best Director, because that's exactly what he should be aiming for. Hopefully, what he's saying is that he doesn't intend to break the wheel, which does fit with what he's said about his love for the originals:
“I love everything about it. The iconography. The music. The tone. I remember being on set and seeing them try out the card catalog gag for the first time when the library ghost makes them come flying out. I remember the day they killed Stay Puft and I brought home a hardened piece of foam that just sat on a shelf for years. I was scared there was a terror dog underneath my bed before people knew what a terror dog was.”
In a fitting tribute to the originals - and a safety net for those concerned that he won't look after the spirit of the originals - Ivan Reitman is also back on board as a producer.
