Ghostbusters: Afterlife Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
4. Jason Reitman's Solid Direction
Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, was certainly an interesting choice to helm Afterlife, but implications of nepotism aside, he acquits himself well as a firm choice of filmmaker for the project.
Reitman isn't a majorly natural pick to helm an effects-heavy blockbuster - even one of this modesty - but he proves himself a good fit regardless.
The film's appealing throwback aesthetic dovetails well into the original movies, far away from the 2016 reboot's sickly, overly glossy visual style.
Reitman also makes the smart decision to employ impressive practical effects in some of the film's later sequences, which bring a welcome tactile quality to the supernatural carnage.
Reitman has demonstrated himself to be a skilled actors' director in the past, so it's little surprise that the cast's performances end up being the general highlight of the movie.
One presumes Reitman will be invited back to direct any potential sequels, and in the very least the man knows how to deliver a well-crafted film in terms of pure cinematic technique.
