4. Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy)
What's perhaps most surprising about Melissa McCarthy's role in this movie is just how ordinary it is. Sure, she's got a big mouth like just about every character she's ever played, but she really feels like a supporting character for much of the movie and frequently takes a backseat to the more outlandish members of the cast.
Abby is an enjoyably no-nonsense Ghostbuster, though, kitted out with probably the best weapon in the movie (essentially a boxing glove with which to battle the ghosts), and being the key to one of the funniest running gags in the whole movie (the inept Chinese food delivery).
It's also refreshing to see a Melissa McCarthy role that doesn't make any overt references to her weight, and she doesn't have a single, goofy pratfall in the entire film, so that certainly feels like progress.
