The studio that devised Godzilla, Toho, hated generic monsters and tried to make each of their creatures as distinctive as possible. Each monster in their movies has a very specific look, attack, and cry.

While the British video game company were working on the game, Super Metroid, they were trying to find sound effects for the alien creatures. The animal noises they had for the creatures sounded too generic and they wanted to find cries that sounded more distinctive.

One of the programmers was a big fan of the Godzilla series and so, decided to incorporated some of the monster cries from the franchise into the game.

When the player defeats the bosses, Crocomire and Phantoon, they let out the same cry that Titanosaurus makes in the 1975 film, Terror of Godzilla. The bosses, Draygon and Ridley, let out the same scream as Anguirus. When the Metroid dies at the end of the game, it lets out the same shriek as Mothra.

Considering how protective Toho Studios is of its properties, its astounding that Retro Studios got away with using these audio clips without getting sued.
