Godzilla Vs. Kong: 10 Places The MonsterVerse Could Go Next

8. The Serizawa Family

Godzilla vs Kong
Warner Bros.

While the human characters are not the MonsterVerse's strong suit, the Serizawa family sticks out. Ishirō Serizawa played a sizeable role in 2014's Godzilla (as well as getting the best line) and then sacrificed himself to bring Godzilla back from the brink in King of the Monsters. Which raises a good question - why, then, is his son Ren Serizawa (played by Shun Oguri) working with Apex against Godzilla and the other Titans, when his father clearly believed that their survival was paramount to planet Earth's wellbeing?

Young Ren is the Mechagodzilla pilot, making use of the telepathic connection between the now dead King Ghidorah's skulls to take charge of the mechanical monster Pacific Rim-style. His backstory and motivations, however, are left largely unexplored, despite the obvious connection to, and contrast with, his late father. What made Ren decide to go against his dad's line of thinking so dramatically?

The Serizawas are connected to the Titans unlike any other family in the franchise. More detail about the relationship between Ishirō, Ren, and any other relatives who make a living out of the Titans would give the MonsterVerse a depth and thoughtfulness that it has largely sidestepped up until now.
