Godzilla Vs. Kong: 20 WTF Moments

17. Kong Knows Sign Language

One of the toughest obstacles in a movie focused on generally mute monsters and not-remotely-mute humans is how they can interact without it seeming goofy.

But the film has an unexpected solution, especially if you haven't been slavishly paying attention to every trailer: Kong can understand sign language.

Early on, Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) is speaking to her deaf adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a native to Skull Island who shares a special bond with Kong throughout the film.

When Jia explains that she can communicate with Kong, Ilene is doubtful, until she sees Jia and Kong signing to one another, with Kong signing the word, "Home."

It's an elegant way to move things forward without just cutting away to expositing humans, and also helps Jia feel like a more integral part of the overall narrative - a rarity for children in blockbuster movies, really.
