Golden Globes 2017: 7 Ups & 6 Downs

Going into the night, La La Lend led the way with seven nominations - and then made history by winning every single one of them, becoming the most awarded film in Globes history (beating the record of six jointly-held by One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Midnight Express).

It picked up wins for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, and the respective lead actor awards to go with it, as well as Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song, all of which were contested on a more level (i.e. not separated by genre) playing field, which is particularly good for its Oscar chances.

It's really hard to argue with any of the wins either. The movie is an absolute triumph, a beautiful, melancholy musical that invoked everything from 7th Heaven to the work of Jaques Demy, by way of Golden Age of Hollywood glitz and glamour, while also adding its own modern influences and twists. The only argument is perhaps Best Screenplay, which isn't the film's biggest strength and was a hotly-contested category with a number of deserving nominees, but it feels like a minor quibble rather than a major oversight.
