Golden Globes 2018: 7 Ups & 5 Downs
2. In The Fade Wins Best Foreign Film...For Some Reason
Perhaps the most inexplicable win of the entire night transpired in the Best Foreign Language Film category, where the Diane Kruger-starring drama In the Fade won the gong over its far more acclaimed competition, A Fantastic Woman, First They Killed My Father, Loveless and The Square.
Though Kruger's performance has been widely praised and even singled out as far superior to the rest of the movie, it's still an odd move to reward a film with such a middling response compared to its rivals.
It seems like the infamously star-friendly HFPA voted for Kruger rather than the movie itself, hence its baffling victory.
This is all without even mentioning director Fatih Akin's horribly ill-advised joke about the movie's distributor Warner Bros., where he quipped, "If you see a cop...warn a brother." Just...no.
