Golden Globes 2020: 10 Ups & 6 Downs

5. Renée Zellweger Beats Scarlett Johansson For Best Actress

The enthusiastic support for Renée Zellweger's performance as Judy Garland in Judy is, honestly, a bit baffling.

It's certainly not a bad performance, but Zellweger is forever at the mercy of a woefully generic screenplay and mediocre direction, such that her performance itself shouldn't really be more than a fringe nominee at best.

But sticking true to the HFPA's penchant for rewarding broad fare, Zellweger took home the Best Film Actress (Drama) award, defeating a number of effortlessly superior turns, namely Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story and Saoirse Ronan in Little Women.

Opinions are opinions of course, but quite how so many can truly believe Zellweger's performance to be the best of the five is just baffling. And from what we've seen so far, it seems like she's also going to steamroll her way to her second Oscar win.
