Golden Globes 2021: Biggest Surprises & The Worst Snubs
1. Minari Is Butchered
Now, since the nominations have come out and we all realised that Minari had been ignored a total of 5 times for Best Actor Drama, Best Picture Drama, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay, there has been a revelation as to why one of these things happened.
It seems that Minari's distributor A24 chose to list the film as a Foreign Language nominee rather than a nominee for Best Picture Drama. Which was what they also did to The Farewell last year.
The problem is that Minari is probably the best film made this year hands-down and it was made by an American director in America, with American production companies and a lead actor that is Korean-American.
Unlike the BAFTAs or The Oscars, the Globes have a rule that you can't nominate a film for Foreign Language and Best Picture, you have to choose. What this doesn't explain is why Minari was omitted for the rest of the awards it deserves not just a nomination for but has a big shot at a win.
Steven Yeun's lead performance is powerful and delicate, where Han Ye-ri's is strong and restrained. Both should have been nailed on for their acting but have been ousted in favour of worse turns. Lee Isaac Chung's direction and screenplay are masterful representations of an immigrant family's life in America and their struggles.
It garnered a meagre 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and a pathetic 87/100 on Metacritic. Which according to The Hollywood Foreign Press just isn't enough if their nominations are anything to go by.
Mank has a far better 83% RT score and 79/100 on Metacritic, so obviously it garnered 6 nominations.
